Understanding California Elevator Code Requirements

California State Code for Testing of Conveyances complies with sections 8.6 and 8.11 of ASME A17.1-2019, or the applicable requirements of ASME A18.12020 or ASME B20.1-2021.
To comply with the code, all devices need to be inspected as follows:

  • Periodic tests shall be performed annually
  • Category 1 test witnessing shall be completed once every 12 months;
  • Category 3 tests shall be completed once every 36 months; and
  • Category 5 tests shall be completed once every 60 months.

All inspections and test witnessing must be performed by state accredited inspectors (CCCI - Certified Competent Conveyance Inspectors). Reports will be filed with the State, and if no additional corrections of deficiencies are needed, the device’s operating permit will be issued by the Agency Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
